Turkish brothers were rescued after spending 198 hours under rubble

Nine days have passed since the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, described as the “disaster of the century”, and rescue teams continue to find people alive under the rubble.

These are rescues that are considered miraculous, since the magnitude of the tremor and the intense cold have caused the death of more than 37,000 people, and the time that has passed increasingly reduces the chances that survivors will continue to appear.

Deaths in Turkey and Syria rise to 35,000 a week after the earthquake

The brothers Enes and Baki Yeniar are two of the lucky ones who were rescued this Tuesday, 198 hours after the demolition.

Muhammed Enes Yeninar, 17, and his brother Baki Yeninar, 21, were trapped when their residence in the Turkish city of Kahramanmarash, epicenter of the strong earthquake. They both survived on the protein powder Enes kept in her drawer, and on a phone they were able to grab before their home fell apart.

Family members shed tears as the brothers were removed from the rubble, and rescuers hugged as they pulled them out alive. After the intervention of the medical teams on the site, the brothers were taken to the hospital by ambulance.

One of the brothers, Enes Yeniar, said: “Normally, we used to go to work with my brother in the morning. I put a clock on the phone and said that I was going to get up early today. I woke up and it trembled a bit hard,” the 17-year-old recalled about the time of the earthquake last Monday in a statement to state broadcaster TRT Haber.

“I told (Baki), ‘brother, get up.’ The upstairs walls came crashing down on me. If we hadn’t found the phone, I wouldn’t be living right now. I usually play sports, so I have protein powder in my drawer.”

“I snuggled up and slept with my brother”

“I counted 12 days. We were calm. I was lucky to find the phone, my brother was with me, ”Baki Yeniar recounted after rescuing him.

“There was a flow of fresh air. We pray to God. We eat protein powder. We had to empty our urine, I was a little nauseous. We sleep most of the time, we cuddle and sleep with my brother. Thank God we came out safe and sound. May God be pleased with everyone,” said the older brother.

People around the world offer to adopt Aya, the newborn rescued from the rubble of the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, while thousands of children are displaced

It is estimated that there are still tens of thousands of people under the rubble, whose voices are still being heard, motivating rescuers to continue searching for survivors.

In the same region, emergency teams saved a 35-year-old woman who was believed to have been buried for around 205 hours, according to TRT Haber.
