UN asks for funds to help 874,000 people due to the earthquake in Turkey and Syria

Since the devastating earthquake was registered on Monday, the entity has distributed food to some 115,000 people in Syria and Turkey.

“Distribution at various points is ongoing. We are mainly providing hot meals, ready-to-eat food rations and food packages for families that do not require cooking facilities and they can be consumed immediately”, explained the regional director for the Middle East and North Africa of the WFP, Corinne Fleischer.

“To the thousands of people affected by the earthquakes, food is one of the main needs right now and our priority is to quickly get it to the people who need it,” he added.

The UN agency, which has been operating for four days in the affected areas, hopes to help 284,000 people who were displaced in Syria and some 590,000 homeless people in Turkey.

The earthquake caused the death of more than 22,000 peopleaccording to a still provisional report.

WFP has so far helped 43,000 people in Syria and 73,000 people in Turkey by providing ready-to-eat food.

The World Food Program (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian organization and focuses on food assistance.

Last year it helped 97 million people in 88 countries suffering from acute food shortages and famine.

In 2020, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for his efforts to combat hunger and for his contribution to improving peace conditions in conflict-affected areas.” (YO)
