Kudai feels connected to Ecuador “It is an important country for us, because it is also part of the history with Gaby (Villalba)”

The last time they offered a concert in Ecuador they were about 16 years old; they sported the traditional bangs of the emo subculture, wore black eyeliner, and skulls on their clothing. Now they are 30 years old and although they continue to play with their looks, they see this profession as a therapy, but also as a company. In fact, the family is bigger after two of them they became parents. But the essence is still there, the complicity between them and the songs that continue to be part of the history of an entire generation that is already counting the days to see again Kudai in concert.

Kudai will sing in Quito and Guayaquil, this is what you should know about the musical event

The Chilean band is back on stage, Quito and Guayaquil are some of the cities chosen for this tour by some cities in Latin America. The members of Kudai: Barbara Sepulveda, Tomás Manzi, Nicole Natalino and Pablo Holman they are also very excited to return to the country they lovingly describe. so they say In an interview with EL UNIVERSO, two of its members.

As soon as Bárbara connects, she says hello and apologizes for the delay (the truth is very brief), while she deals with her little affinity for technology when trying to discover how the camera turns on, the dentist also says that she had to attend to a patient scheduled above of the organized Before, Tomás showed from his window how the forest fires are affecting the south of Chile. Both artists are confident and acknowledge how excited they are about their shows next Friday and Saturday.

“We are very happy, very excited to be able to return to Ecuador again”, says Tomás, who says that this country has always received them with great affection, and that he has always asked for them through social networks.

“Ecuador is an important country for us, because it is also part of the history with Gaby (Gabriela Villalba, former member)”indicates the artist.

Barbara agrees with this, or ‘Barbi’ as her fans affectionately call her. “These are countries that were part of our musical growth, our personal growth. The fact that Gaby was there at the time brought us closer to the country, they are an important part of our trajectory”, mentions, for his part, the singer.

“We are going with high expectations, we are very anxious”, Add.

They both have good memories of the country, and in fact they say that when they return they would like to taste some warm cassava bread and fish. “The Guayaquil airport is very nice, I think one of the most beautiful in all of Latin America”Barbara says.

They claim that it will be a Show long, with which they will cover their entire discography. “It’s a Show that we have been preparing and renewing every time, literally, every week… musically it is very current, as we also wanted to update all our greatest hits”, explain.

“We want it to be really a Show long and that they can enjoy it to the core”, says Barbara, who admits that it is a way of rewarding the waiting of all her fans.

emo nostalgia

Listening to Kudai’s songs again, being over 30 years old, is like re-reading a book from years ago, something more is always discovered or identified with new existentialist discussions.“I relate it a lot to the book of The little PrinceYou can read it at different stages of your life and it will always give you a different meaning and that is good”considers Barbara, who in turn cites Far from here, song that covers global warming, one of the great issues that plagues the world.

Kudai is from the era of other Latin American pop bands such as Panda, Motel, Erreway, RBD, Nikki Clan, among others that are part of the musical nostalgia of the 2000s.

“I never imagined that we would penetrate so deeply into the collective musical memory of so many generations. We didn’t look for it, it happened in a super-genuine way, I think in part it was because we started out very young in music”, Barbara reflects.

“Some of our fans tell us that they managed to overcome many important crises in their lives, depressions, some kind of violence, strong situations within their family, within their environment, at their school. They managed to deal with it somehow through Kudai’s music, through Kudai’s videos,” he adds.

And until when will they make music? “We are going to continue making music as long as people like it and as long as people continue to listen to us.we are going to be there making music, hopefully, forever”.

music, a therapy

At this point in their lives, when each one of them navigates their time between professions, parenthood and touring, they see music as therapy and a perfect escape that allows them to reconnect with that teenager who sang Without waking up, let me scream either There is nothing.

“Hopefully that never ceases to exist (the nerves). The tummy tickle. This desire to cry, it happens to me that I get very nervous and I start to pray… I’m a bit dramatic”, says Bárbara, of whom a video was circulated crying before going on stage during the 2000s Pop Tour of Mexico.

Tomás, on the other hand, realizes that he has spent half of his life in Kudai. “It has been a school, it has been a place of recreation, of creation, it has really been many things in our lives,” says the artist who is currently dedicated to electronic music.

They reveal that the most difficult thing to continue with the Kudai project is to agree with the times, but that they succeed. “We all try to be very open-minded, understand each other, understand each other and continue to the extent that each one contributes. Up on stage we complement each other, we like to make music, we have a good time, we love each other”tell the Chileans, who recognize that as in every family, fights are not lacking.

-Who manages to tame the waters?

-I wish there was someone like that, answers Tomás between laughs

– But you know that sometimes Pablo has that role, says Barbara.

Barbara describes Tomás as experimental and free, Nico as clueless, but now “more of a lady”, and she as the one with the worst character. “I’m not very subtle to say things.”

At his age, dressing in the punk looks, poppers and even ‘abstract’ is quite an experience that they enjoy to the fullest”That is the good thing about music and getting on stage gives you the chance to get out of your daily role and play with styles”.

“We have never felt disguised. The things that we have worn have always been because we like to get out of style a bit, to experience new things ”, says Barbara, who wears clinical suits every day.

new sounds

In less than 10 hours, the video clip reached more than 140,000 views on YouTube.

Although they discuss the fact of making urban music at some point, they do not rule it out completely. And it is that in his last album Labyrinth They showed that as artists they want to continue navigating new sound experiences.

“One is always transforming, with the passing of the years one is discovering new timbres of voice. I discovered lower tones that I didn’t use before due to the fact that I learned to sing with emo music. You have to reinvent yourself and always rediscover yourself”, says Tomás, who anticipates that this year there will be collaborations between the group and contemporary artists.
