An anticovid measure imposed by South Korea discontinued the issuance of short-stay visas for travelers from Chinain addition to requiring a mandatory PCR test for anyone coming from the Asian country.
These restrictions infuriated China, which had just lifted an extensive quarantine on its territory due to the increase in infections covid-19.
Days after these measures were approved in January, China also canceled short-stay visas for South Koreanscriticizing Seoul’s decisions as “discriminatory”.
However, South Korea has decided to take a step back, because according to its records, the number of infected passengers arriving from China fell to 1.4% last week, compared to 20% when the restriction was imposed.
The South Korean Center for Disease Control announced that for this reason “will remove restrictions on short-stay visas”although will maintain the obligation to submit a PCR test.
For its part, China “will actively explore the possibility of resuming the granting of short-term visas to South Koreans visiting China,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman said. (YO)
