Research from Peking University determined that in 2009, the rotation of Earth’s solid inner core has stopped and may be starting to reverse. The study published in Nature Geoscience’, makes scientists think that this inversion occurs periodically, around once every seven decades.
The internal core, solid and formed mainly by iron and nickel, is physically separated from the rest of the Earth mass by the external core, made of liquid iron, which allows it to maintain a rotation independent and different from that of the Earth itself.
According to data obtained by scientists, the rotation speed of the Earth’s core would have slowed down in recent years and, in addition, it would have begun to turn in the opposite direction, towards the west.
To reach these results, the scientists analyzed the rotation speed of the Earth’s core would have slowed down in recent years and, in addition, it would have begun to turn in the opposite direction, towards the west.
The inner core seemed to move a little faster than the mantle, but analyzing earthquakes that have occurred over different decades, it seems that this rotation speed has been varying, in such a way that, with respect to the rotation speed of the Earth’s mantle, sometimes it has gone faster and sometimes slower through a cycle lasting about 70 years.
This stoppage can have global effects, such as shortening the days by a few fractions of a second and influencing the climate and sea level. (YO)
