First UN humanitarian convoy arrives in the Ukrainian city of Soledar

The United Nations (UN) stated that his first humanitarian aid convoy arrived this friday on the outskirts of solder, one of the most disputed Ukrainian towns since the invasion of Russia and recently scene of bloody combats.

“This is the first inter-institutional convoy that arrives in this area since the war began”, spokesman for the UN humanitarian agency, Jens Laerke, told reporters in Geneva.

These are three trucks that transport water, food and basic necessities for some 800 people, accurate. The convoy is in the area controlled by the Ukrainian government.

“Recent fighting in and around Soledar caused massive destruction and left people in urgent need of humanitarian aid,” Laerke said. The United Nations is trying to organize other humanitarian convoys to the area.

“Our colleagues from the convoy will have seen for themselves the state of the population and the current situation. It is a region where there has been a lot of fighting, so naturally humanitarian aid is needed now and perhaps in the immediate future,” the spokesperson added.

The Russian army and mercenaries from the Wagner group announced last week that they had conquered the town, located in eastern Ukraine near Bakhmut, which Moscow has been trying to control for months.

The Ukrainians deny this and say that Soledar is still under kyiv control. The city had about 10,000 inhabitants before the conflict.

In its daily report, the Ukrainian army assured that its forces had stopped Russian “attacks” in a dozen towns in the Donetsk region, including Soledar, in the last 24 hours. (YO)
