Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg accused the attendees of the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday of “fueling the destruction of the planet”in an event held outside the official program.
“We are right now in Davos, where are basically the people who feed the destruction of the planet the most”, he assured.
“They are people who are at the very center of the climate crisis, the people who invest in fossil fuels, etc.and yet, in a way, they are the people we seem to trust to solve our problems,” he added.
The 20-year-old Swede participated in a debate with three other young activists, the Ecuadorian Helena Gualingathe Ugandan Vanessa Nakate and the German Luisa Neubauer, in a panel organized by the CNBC chain in which the director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, also participated.
Thunberg affirmed that the change will have to come from “bottom up”.
“Without massive public pressure from outside, these people are going to go as far as they can, as long as they can get away with it,” he said, and “keep investing in fossil fuels.”
For his part, Fatih Birol said that the energy sector must be transformed or “we will have no chance of reaching our climate goals.” (YO)
