Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro disassociated himself from the serious events that occurred this Sunday in Brasilia.
Thousands of his followers invaded the presidential palace, the Congress and the Supreme Court, staging violent confrontations with the security forces, who finally evicted them.
“Peaceful demonstrations are part of democracy. Nevertheless, looting and invasion of public buildings like those that occurred today, as well as those practiced by the left in 2013 and 2017, deviate from the rule,” Bolsonaro said in a Twitter post.
From the beginning of the insurrection until the ex-president spoke on the social network, six hours passed.
Bolsonaro is in Florida, where he moved at the end of December, in the last days of his presidency.
His departure for the US was interpreted as a deliberate action to avoid attending the inauguration of his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who beat him in the October elections by a narrow margin.
“Throughout my tenure I have always remained within the four lines of the Constitution, respecting and defending the laws, democracy, transparency and our sacred freedom,” the former president continued on his Twitter thread.

Bolsonaro refused to officially acknowledge his defeat in the elections, although before leaving Brazil he asked his supporters to avoid resorting to violence.
“Also, I repudiate the accusationswithout evidence, which the current head of the Executive of Brazil attributed to me”, in reference to the speech given hours before by Lula.
In his speech after the events in Brasilia, the new president accused his predecessor of being responsible for this “terrorist act.”
Lula described those who were behind the assault on Congress as “fanatical fascists” and assured that they will be “found and punished.”

The Brazilian authorities announced that they maintain control of the federal buildings and have managed to evict almost all the “Bolsonaristas”.
The Brazilian authorities announced that there are at least 200 protesters arrested after the attempt to take over the institutions. (YO)
