López Obrador asks Biden to insist on immigration reform for Mexicans

The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, asked this Tuesday his American counterpart, Joe Bidento insist before the US Congress to approve an immigration reform that regularizes the millions of Mexicans living in that country.

“I have respectfully asked President Biden to insist (on immigration reform), and I know that it is not a simple matter, but it is fair, and that is why I am raising it, and I also have full confidence in President Biden”declared after the Summit of North American Leaders that took place in Mexico City.

“I have asked him to insist before the United States Congress to regularize the immigration status of millions of Mexicans who have been living, working, and contributing to the development of that great nation that is the United States for years.” added.

He did so at the end of the trilateral meeting with Biden and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, on the occasion of the X Summit of North American Leaders, where the immigration issue was one of the main topics of debate.

“The immigration issue, like others, was dealt with extensively. Important agreements were reached by the three countries for the benefit of our peoples”, Lopez Obrador said.

An immigration reform to regulate the almost 11 million undocumented immigrants who live in USA, of which almost half are of Mexican origin, has been one of López Obrador’s main requests so far in the Biden Administration.

On the other hand, the United States announced last week a new migration policy through which it promised to welcome up to 30,000 migrants from Haiti, Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua per month, as long as they enter the country by air.

If they enter through the land border, migrants will be deported to Mexico.

“We celebrate that the United States Government has made the decision to order the migratory flow”said López Obrador when asked about it.

In addition, the Mexican president denied that they plan to create a new migration center in the southeast of the country.

In his speech, Biden thanked López Obrador for Mexico having committed to receiving all those migrants who do not meet the requirements established in the new Washington policy.

“I want to thank you, Mr. President, for stepping forward and receiving in Mexico those who do not follow the legal paths that we have established, instead of trying to cross the border between our countries,” express.
