The World Economic Forum (WEF), which celebrates the 53rd edition of its celebrated annual meeting next week, announced today a record attendance of political, economic and business leaders who will discuss how to turn the battered economy around and, above all, restore lost trust.
Title “Cooperation in a fragmented world” chosen for this year’s meeting seems more accurate than ever and seeks to offer the bases to find solutions to the economic, energy and food crises that are taking place simultaneously, according to the organizers.
“To address the root causes of the loss of confidence, we need to strengthen cooperation between governments and the private sector, creating the conditions for a strong and durable recovery.”, said the founder and CEO of the World Economic Forum, Klaus Schwab.
The Forum indicated that this year it will have the participation in person of 2,700 leaders from all countries, among which the presence of the presidents of Colombia, Gustavo Petro; from Spain, Pedro Sánchez; from the Philippines, Ferninand Marcos; from South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, as well as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
In total, the organization indicated that it will have fifty heads of state and government, of which thirty will be European, which reflects the tensions facing the continent due to situations such as the war in Ukraine and inflation.
The economy will focus a large part of the debates, which explains a massive presence of economy, finance or trade ministers, and some twenty central bank governors.
The forum said there will also be a significant presence from Asia and in particular a “high level delegation” from China, without specifying its composition yet.
“The stakes are high in the global economy, especially how to avoid a global recession”, explained Schwab at a press conference to present the program of the annual meeting, which each year marks the beginning of the international political and business agenda.
The economist and member of the board of directors of the Forum, Saadia Zahidi, said that one of the central discussions will revolve around prosperity and the correct way to rethink growth and investments, “and that it doesn’t have to be how we’ve seen them in the past, which harm the environment and negatively affect people.”
This issue, he added, will be addressed by leaders from the public and private sectors, with the intention of designing a global agenda for this purpose.
The Forum assured that it will place a special emphasis on gender equality, racial equity and geographical diversity throughout the week of discussions that will be held in Davos, a town in the canton of Grisons, a remote region of Switzerland. where the Forum has held its annual meeting since its origins.
