The European Parliament wants suspend access to Qatari representatives to the institution until the judicial investigation of the alleged bribery scheme, also known as the ‘Catargate’, is resolved. The alleged case of corruption has uncovered alleged bribes from Qatar to MEPs and staff of the European Parliament to gain political and economic weight, where the vice-presidents of the European Parliament have been affected, Eva Kaili, suspended from office this Tuesday.
The political groups of the European Parliament denounce the attempts of Qatar to influence the deputies, ex-deputies and staff of the European Parliament, and have underlined the need to enlarge the EU transparency register to representatives of third countries, in addition to strengthening the mechanism, in terms of budget and staff, so that it can more thoroughly verify the information provided by registrants.
The textthat will be voted this thursday and has been agreed by the entire parliamentary arch, calls for the suspension of access to the European Parliament for Qatari representatives and for all work on legislative files related to Qatar to be paralyzed, particularly in relation to visa liberalization and planned visits.
