China conducts naval military exercises amid tensions with Taiwan

A detachment of destroyers conducted actual combat training in an unspecified area.

The Chinese military today began a series of live-fire military exercises in the East China Sea, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

A detachment of destroyers conducted actual combat training in an unspecified area against “unidentified high-speed targets.”

The maneuvers come at a time of great tension between Taiwan and China.

In October, a record number of Chinese fighter jets entered Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), followed by the passage of a US destroyer through the Taiwan Strait, which was condemned by Beijing.

Last week, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen confirmed for the first time that the United States has a military presence on the island “to train Taiwanese troops”, something that China described as a “provocation” and a “threat against peace “from Washington.

During the G20 meeting held last weekend in Rome, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi explained to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that “the Taiwan issue is the most sensitive” among the two powers.

The Taiwanese authorities announced yesterday that they would reinforce the training of the reserve military forces with the aim of improving their readiness for actual combat.

China has considered Taiwan a rogue province since the Kuomintang nationalists retreated there in 1949 after losing the civil war against the Communists.

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently opted for a “peaceful reunification” with the island, a change from the statement made in early 2019, when he said he would not renounce the use of force to regain sovereignty. (I)
