The first signs of slowdown of the monkeypox outbreak in Europe. The decrease in cases recorded in several European countries is an indication that the outbreak of monkeypox may be backing up on the mainlandThe regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.
“Our region was where the first cases of this outbreak emerged, where we are seeing the first signs of the outbreak slowing down, and where we believe we can eventually eliminate monkeypox if we commit to doing so. This political objective is a clear message to all about what we believe to be the final objective”, indicated the regional Director of the Regional Office for Europe of the World Health Organization (WHO), Hans Kluge.
In countries like France, Germany, Portugal, Spain, UK the outbreak is shrinking. Kluge was convinced that it is possible to eliminate human-to-human transmission. The WHO European region has so far registered 22,000 cases in the 43 countries that comprise it, which represents more than a third of the global.
WHO Europe has launched a series of reports on monkeypox for the WHO European Region, which covers 53 countries in Europe and Central Asia. Dr. Catherine Smallwood points to the goal of “taking advantage of the early response to monkeypox in Europe, in order to eliminate sustained human-to-human transmission in the Region.”
The first report in this series, entitled “Considerations for the control and elimination of monkeypox in the WHO European Region”, has been produced in collaboration with the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDCfor its acronym in English).
The document offers a set of general recommendations on how to control the outbreak and ultimately achieve and sustain monkeypox elimination from the region.
The second document in the series, entitled “Policy Brief on Vaccination Against Monkeypox in the WHO European Region”, will be of particular interest to managers of national immunization programmes.(I)
