On August 29, in Quito, the progress of the country’s bioeconomy public policy was announced and work began on the preparation of the first White Paper on the Bioeconomy of Ecuador. The French Development Agency (AFD), in coordination with the Sustainable Environmental Investment Fund (FIAS), the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (Maate) and the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Investment and Fisheries Production (MPCEIP) promote the project .
The preparation of the book and the National Bioeconomy Strategy is an activity financed by AFD through the bioeconomy technical assistance fund in Ecuador, managed by FIAS, which represents a non-reimbursable economic contribution of 1.5 to also advance the work regarding the national communication strategy on bioeconomy, consultancies and studies, and reforms of regulatory documents, which will be carried out during the 4 years (2022-2026) that the fund is in force.
Ecuador: from the oil economy to the bioeconomy
“Ecuador is one of the few megadiverse countries on the planet, taking advantage of that wealth by ensuring its protection is an opportunity that cannot be missed. Until today, with the joint work with the Maate, with the Ministries of Production and Agriculture, with civil society, academia and the private sector, we have managed to develop a very ambitious public policy matrix with which we hope to have great results”. indicated Jean-Philippe Berthelémy, director in charge of the AFD in Quito.
At the launch event, the participants raised different themes, objectives and key recommendations to feed the work of the consultants from the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja who will help in the project.
Public-private alliance seeks to promote and develop sustainable businesses that take advantage of Ecuador’s biodiversity
“The AFD has provided significant support in this project, through its technical assistance, to strengthen the public policy of the economy and the conservation of biodiversity. These important steps have allowed us to reach this moment: the launch of the preparation of the White Paper on the Bioeconomy. The great challenge is not only to produce and take advantage of the resources that we have as a country; but also to be able to guide the consumer and that these actions that we are beginning to translate into this agenda are embraced by Ecuadorians and become a new economic model,” said Alfonso Abdo, Vice Minister of Production.
