In the six months that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has lasted “it has changed the world, history and our country,” said the Ukrainian president on Wednesday, Volodymyr Zelensky.
In a video on the occasion of the celebration of Ukraine Independence Dayof which the 31st anniversary is commemorated, the president has also referred to the invasion that the country is suffering, which today marks the six months.
“Six months ago, Russia declared war on us. On February 24, the whole of Ukraine heard explosions and shots,” he said.
“On February 24 they told us: You have no chance. But on August 24 we say: Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!” Zelensky added.
For the politician, in these “six months we have changed history, the world and we have changed ourselves. Now we know for sure who really is our brother and friend, and who is not even an acquaintance.”
As he pointed out, “the whole world has found out who the Ukrainians are… No one else will say about Ukraine: it is somewhere, close to Russia.”
“We didn’t have HIMARS (high-capacity rocket systems) yet, but there were people who were ready to stop tanks with their bare hands. They weren’t ready to close the sky (with an air shield), but we had people who were ready to close (defend) their homeland for themselves,” he added.
In addition, in his opinion, Ukraine has managed to revitalize “the entire continent. Europe goes to the squares. Europe introduces harsh sanctions. Europe unanimously recognizes that Ukraine is a future member of the European Union“.
It is Independence Day in Ukraine, yes, but no parties or mass events have been organized because of fear. Moreover, the Government has recommended its citizens, for the umpteenth time, to flee Ukraine due to the possibility of an attack by the Russian Army.
Russia claims that the “special military operation” in Ukraine is going “according to plan”
In parallel, the Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigupointed out that the “special military operation” in Ukraine is going “according to plan”, and explained that the Russian Army is carrying out “a systematic work in the liberated territories to establish a peaceful life“.
“Ukrainian military units are using scorched earth tactics, blatantly violating international norms and acting like terrorists,” he said, adding that they use the population as a “human shield.” In this way, Shoigu stressed that, since Ukraine refused to comply with the Minsk agreements, there was “a real threat” to the residents of the Donbass region, for which the “special military operation” was “necessary”. .
Likewise, the Russian Defense Minister has assured that the slowdown in actions on the Ukrainian ground is a “conscious” decision, since “it is done deliberately to avoid civilian casualties.”
“Today a harsh war of sanctions and information has been unleashed against Russia. The conflict in Ukraine has become one more pretext. The objective of the United States and its accomplices is the strategic exhaustion of Russia to eliminate competition and warn other States who pursue an independent foreign policy,” he concluded.
