Archaeologists excavating a side chamber in Theban Tomb 209, situated in the western necropolis of Thebes, have documented how ancient Egyptian burial practices transformed across centuries from individual coffin interments to vertically stacked mummies.
According to a report by Ars Technica, researchers reconstructed the timeline of the tomb chamber, which remained in continuous use from the 25th Dynasty in the 8th century BC through to the Ptolemaic period.
The site, located on the west bank of the Nile River in modern Luxor, formed part of ancient Thebes, a prominent religious and political capital of ancient Egypt. Over hundreds of years, shifting cultural traditions and space limitations altered how the local population buried their dead.

High status burials and luxury grave goods
In the earliest phase of the chamber's history, the deceased were buried individually inside elaborate wooden coffins. Archaeologists identified these early occupants as individuals of high social standing due to the costly grave goods buried alongside them, including protective amulets, funerary nets, and imported Phoenician amphorae.
In these older interments, bodies were laid out with their arms fully extended. The variation in burial style mirrors patterns observed elsewhere in Egypt, such as pharaonic limestone and plastered brick tombs featuring wall paintings excavated at Abydos, where practices varied by era, region, and social rank.
Transition to stacked vertical mummies
As centuries passed, coffins disappeared from the chamber entirely and the space was repurposed. Mummies placed directly on top of one another in vertical layers occupied the remaining room, with subsequent interments arranged to fit around existing bodies.

The physical positioning of the deceased also changed during this later era, with arms folded across the body rather than extended. Despite the density of the remains, researcher Jared Carballo-Perez explained that the physical organization respected earlier remains and followed a specific spatial logic, noting that each new burial adapted to the presence of previous bodies rather than erasing existing interments.
Co-researcher Miguel Angel Molinero Polo added that although coffins ceased to be used, mummification was still executed meticulously. He stated that bodies placed in vertical superposition lacked coffins but were carefully mummified, with several specimens accompanied by upright vessels linked to a funerary ritual not present in earlier stages.
Chamber contents and environmental threats
Excavations inside the side chamber uncovered 16 mummified individuals and 1,444 bones. In an adjoining section, archaeologists identified another 1,775 bone fragments belonging to at least four additional individuals, alongside a mummified dog.
Reconstructing the history of the site presented significant challenges because the tomb lies inside a drainage channel in Wadi Hatasun, a dry desert valley subject to periodic flash floods over the centuries. Torrential waters swept sediment and skeletal material through the complex, leading excavators to focus on the side chamber because its relatively better preservation allowed distinct phases to be recognized clearly.
Widespread tomb reuse in ancient Thebes
The patterns discovered at Theban Tomb 209 reflect broader funerary customs across the region rather than an isolated practice. Approximately 80 percent of Theban tombs from the first millennium BC contain human remains from multiple historical periods alongside artifacts associated with differing burial traditions.
This evidence shows that tomb reuse was standard practice in ancient Thebes, forming part of a long-term evolution in Egyptian funerary traditions extending back 5,000 years. Rather than abandoning full tombs, successive generations adapted their burial customs, maintaining careful mummification rituals even as individual coffins were phased out.
