A Tesla broke apart after colliding with an oncoming SUV and landing in a roadside ditch in Issaquah, Washington on July 29, 2026. According to witnesses, roughly one third of the vehicle’s rear section separated completely from the body due to the car’s weight, speed, and the force of the impact. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The driver told police the vehicle was operating on Tesla’s FSD system at the time of the crash. Authorities noted that Tesla labels the feature “Supervised,” meaning the driver must continuously monitor the road and take control when necessary. Federal safety guidelines, they said, also make clear that such driver-assistance systems do not transfer legal responsibility away from the driver.
Issaquah police said investigators will examine the vehicle’s software version, telemetry data, speed, and whether the driver intervened. It was not yet clear whether data on why the car suddenly changed lanes would be released publicly.
