Insider Ming-Chi Ko: Apple failed to create its own 5G modem for the iPhone

Authoritative insider Ming-Chi Ko said that Apple will continue to purchase modems for the iPhone from Qualcomm. The specialist reported this in his Twitter.

Over the past few years, Apple has been working on producing its own 5G modem for smartphones, Ko said. However, the company failed in this mission and therefore will continue to rely on components from partners.

The insider also noted that the American company was planning to replace chips from Qualcomm with its own equipment. But due to the fact that the corporation’s engineers could not create a worthy alternative, Apple will purchase modems from a partner until at least 2023.

The specialist refuted his own forecast that in the coming years, the IT giant will purchase only 20 percent of modems from third-party suppliers, and produce the rest on its own. According to him, the development of modems will take years – the company will not only create a device, but also test it on the iPhone.

Previously, Apple repeatedly sued Qualcomm – the last dispute was settled in 2019. The American company planned to switch to 5G modems from Intel, but the partners were unable to create components that meet Apple standards.

In March, Counterpoint analysts reported that the share of 5G-enabled smartphones surpassed 50 percent for the first time. The share of such devices in the global market was a record 51 percent.
