Picasso and Velázquez fascinate NATO: the reaction of the leaders when seeing Guernica or Las Meninas

The Prado Museum hosted the closing dinner of the NATO summitan unbeatable environment to display our culture and history before the leaders of the Atlantic Alliance.

In the museum, we saw faces of genuine fascination, with Pedro Sanchez as a ‘tour guide’ with his guests. One of the clearest examples is found in Kaja KallasPrime Minister of Estonia, who was perplexed to learn the story behind Velázquez’s Las Meninas.

The Velázquez that we see in the painting paints Philip IV and Mariana of Austriawhom we see in the mirror in the background and who in real life would occupy the position of the spectator, who sees what the kings would see, the Meninas, and everything to end up being a large portrait of the infanta Margarita, in the center .

The President of Latvia, Egils Levitscould not resist taking a photo, as we see in the video, stepping aside to make room for the Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis. He also charmed Emmanuel Macron and his wife, who stayed admiring the work when everyone left.

Similarly, Picasso’s Guernica was a success in the visit to the Reina Sofia Museum, with Queen Letizia acting as hostess. Two works that have lived through wars, changes in government, the fall of monarchies and that can now boast of having lived through another historical moment.
