Turkish troops have been in northern Syria since 2016 to prevent the incursion of Kurdish guerrillas and keep the area under their control.

Turkey has assured today that its Army has killed 29 Kurdish militiamen in northern Syria, where it has maintained troops since 2016 and where a new military operation has been announced for days.
In a brief statement, the Ministry of Defense has assured that the deceased were members of the “PKK/YPG”, the acronym that identifies the Kurdistan Workers’ Partythe active guerrilla in Turkey, and to the Syrian Kurdish militiasand that for Ankara they are two branches of the same organization.
The PKK is considered terrorist by the European Union and the United States, but the YPG are allies of Washington in its fight against the jihadist terrorist group Islamic State.
Turkey succeeded last Tuesday in Sweden and Finland agreed to stop supporting the YPG, as part of a deal for Turkey to lift its veto on NATO entry.
The two Nordic democracies have also committed to lift its arms embargo on Turkeyimposed in response to the various military operations launched on Syrian soil since 2016 to control a strip along the Turkish-Syrian border and prevent incursions into its territory by Kurdish guerrillas.
The Turkish authorities have been announcing for weeks a new military operation to control a 30-kilometer strip inside Syrian soil along the entire common border.
