NASK warns against disinformation. Where to get fake news?

Propaganda narrative, spreading disinformation, and more recently – fake news, is a constant element of the war. The Russian invasion of the country has exacerbated this practice. He warns against him, among others Scientific and Academic Computer Network (NASK), which engages in the fight against fake news.

Let us bear in mind that we are exposed to disinformation at all times. Be critical of any suspicious content on the internet. This approach will allow us not to become a tool in the hands of the authors of disinformation campaigns

– NASK wrote on her Twitter.

Anna Gwozdowska from the portal fakehunter.pap.pl said that many fake news was inspired by Russia and then repeated by unaware people. In her opinion, the Russians discovered that people become defenseless when faced with (untrue) information that influences certain emotions. This is the case, for example, when information arouses fear of the alleged loss of a job due to the arrival of Ukrainians on the market.

The latest information from Ukraine in Ukrainian on our website

The Internet user loses vigilance, does not check the source, does not wonder if the account exists at all, since when it has existed and whether it is worth repeating it. People don’t know Russian, they don’t know Cyrillic and they don’t know Ukrainian, and that’s why they fall for it very easily. There are videos from Ukraine, you need to know at least a little Russian to know that what is in the commentary is not true

– explained Gwozdowska.

How to protect yourself from disinformation?

As NASK has already pointed out, in order to protect yourself from disinformation, you should be vigilant and be critical of the content posted on the Internet. NASK proposes the 5 x Z rule, in which we will successively verify:

  • sources,
  • truthfulness and logic of the relationship,
  • confirmation in other sources,
  • facts and opinions,
  • reporting to the relevant services.

Gazeta.pl, together with the podcast, the Foreign Department also prepared a guide, which consists of four points:

  1. Reach only to large, traditional and prestigious media.
  2. Don’t look for information on social media from influencers.
  3. Read fewer short messages and more longer analyzes.
  4. Give the news about helping Ukrainians, not information about armed clashes.

Recognition is a skill. So let’s practice it with practical examples. These are shown on his profile, among others NASK:

Inaccurate information and a similar structure of posts aimed at arousing anti-Ukrainian sentiment appear on the Internet very often. Such entries are intended to change our attitude towards helping people fleeing the hell of war.

Also Anna Gwozdowska from the portal fakehunter.pap.pl in an interview at RMF FM presented examples of disinformation: “There is a video currently circulating on the web, allegedly made by an Englishman, which would suggest that while traveling from Warsaw via Lviv to Kiev, he found out that there are practically no military operations, there are no refugees and that everything is just a media fiction. The proof of this is to be, for example, the appearance of a film crew in this video from time to time, of which there are many at the border. , it turns out that this is a video shot by a Serb and broadcast first on the Serbian Internet, on their website, which is pro-Russian and then appears, for example, in Poland. “

Another example of a lie cited by Gwozdowska: “The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskiy – according to – does not live in Kiev. He lives in Romania and every day he flies to his office, the bunker in Kiev. The funniest thing is that if he did fly from Romania, it would be about much more dangerous than sitting in Kiev all the time with bodyguards. “
