Android optimization and development are continuous. Chapter 13 of the mobile operating system is currently being retouched. If Google manages to keep the schedule set for the project, the final version is expected to be released in the third quarter of the year.
These are the main novelties present in the new version of the mobile system:
- The photo picker is a data protection feature which aims to allow users applications to access only specific photos or videos or a few. Until now, the motto of this permit has been “all or nothing”. Incidentally, the feature will also arrive retroactively for Android 11 and 12 via an update to Google Play services.
- Search for nearby device without location: Until now, applications that want to connect via Wi-Fi to nearby devices always receive location data from the mobile or tablet. Android 13 offers a new permission that allows apps to search for nearby devices and connect to them via Wi-Fi without giving away the user’s location.
- Faster updates: in version 13, the Google Play Services application will become an interface that allows faster system updates and without intervention from the manufacturer. Google calls this approach Project Mainline. This is a reaction to the fact that device manufacturers often deliver updates slowly or sometimes not at all. As examples, Google mentions not only the photo picker, but also updates to system components, such as Bluetooth or ultra-wideband radio.
- Design and operation: Currently, Google app icons can already adapt to the color of the background image. In the future, this will be possible with the icons of all applications. The goal is to underline Android’s new “Material You” design language with a monochrome color scheme. In addition, in Android 13 you can create custom tiles for quick settings directly in an application, as well as individually configure the language of each of them. Prerequisite for all three features is that they have also been provided for during the development of the respective application.
- Login from the lock screen: If several people use an Android device together or if other people, for example children, are allowed to use it, there is a new feature that will come in handy. This was discovered by Esper, provider of a development platform for Android. It is about the user change and the new login directly from the lock screen.
