Macron asks Putin to protect Ukraine’s nuclear plants

The French presidency reported that the telephone call between the Russian president Vladimir Putin and the French president Emmanuel Macron focused on the safety of nuclear plants in Ukraine.

The call was at Macron’s request and lasted nearly two hours, the Elysee Palace reported.

A French official said Macron insisted to Putin that nuclear plants must respect the safety standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Macron told Putin that these plants should not be attacked or caught in the crossfire.

Putin assured that he has no intention of attacking such facilities and approved the principle of “a dialogue” between the IAEA, Ukraine and Russia on the issue, said the official, who asked not to be identified.

A dialogue on the matter may be organized in the coming days, he added.

Macron reiterated his call for Russia to cease its military operations in Ukraine, emphasizing the need to protect civil defense and allow access for humanitarian aid.

“The (humanitarian) situation is difficult,” including in Mariupol, the source emphasized. “Our demands remain the same: We want Russia to respond to these demands…quickly and clearly.”
