The ‘plug-in’ trend gains followers in Europe: in August more hybrid and electric cars were sold than diesel

The ‘plug-in’ trend is gaining followers in Europe: in August, for the first time, more hybrid and electric cars were sold than diesel cars. In Spain there is still a long way to go, but the trend is to bet on greener cars.

That is the example that moves Francisca. He is looking for a new car and, after all his life driving a diesel, he has decided to change and go for an electrified one. “We are looking at the hybrid for the ecological and for be able to circulate around the city“, he says to the microphones of laSexta.

One in five cars sold in August were plug-in: 21% of sales total compared to diesel, which represents 19.6%. “In September, the electrified reached 11.5% of the quota. More than one in ten vehicles sold in Spain they were pure electric or plug-in hybrids “, explains the communication director of the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC), Noemí Navas.

Now car manufacturers are betting on a specific model: an example, the hybrid SUV type. “There are many kilometers that I do around my house and I preferred a plug-in because electricity at certain times is cheaper than diesel,” says Joaquín, who is visiting a dealership to find out.

Fuel savings are one of the reasons why the sale of this class of vehicles has increased. “To go 2,000 kilometers we would be using, approximately at the current price of gasoline, 30 euros for gasoline and 20 euros for electricity“, affirms the director of product of Toyota Spain, Jose Manuel Mendez. This is the reason why plug-ins could outperform diesel in Spain.
