Incident at the border. A special 3D visualization is intended to help explain it

Border Guard cameras recorded the moment when Polish soldiers fired shots on the border with Belarus at the end of March. The prosecutor’s office will use 3D scanning to investigate the incident.

The Military Police handcuffed and detained three soldiers who were heading towards migrants on the border with Belarus. After the case was recently described by , a storm broke out in Poland. The prosecutor’s office accused two soldiers of exceeding their powers and endangering the lives of other people. The incident took place at the turn of March and April on the section of the Polish border with Belarus near Dubicze Cerkiewne. Investigators ordered a forensic review of the Border Guard footage from the cameras that recorded the incident. The film is to be converted into a 3D image – says meanwhile.

The prosecutor’s office ordered a forensic opinion. The recording was converted into 3D

Proc. Anna Adamiak, spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General, explains that this will allow “to recreate the exact course of the event.” It’s about the distances between soldiers and migrants, visibility, the true angle of soldiers’ weapons, and the behavior of migrants. And most importantly, verify the testimony of two soldiers suspected of abusing their powers, regarding, among others, that they were shooting into the ground. The opinion is to be prepared by the Forensic Laboratory of the Military Police. Onet described that when the migrants started crossing the border, Polish soldiers started shooting in the air and several warning shots were fired. After the migrants fail to react, “soldiers start shooting into the ground in front of them in self-defense.”

What will the recording “converted” to 3D show?

This last sentence is crucial because, according to information from “Rz”, the recording of the incident contradicts it. Therefore, investigators intend to use 3D image visualization, thanks to which the recording will show the image “from the eyes” of the soldiers. Border Guard cameras are mounted on high masts. And as one of the officers explains, the distance and point of view are of paramount importance to whether they shot “under the migrants’ feet” or above. The 3D scanner sees the image in a 360-degree radius.
