Germany bans sale of Motorola and Lenovo smartphones due to patents

Motorola and Lenovo have been banned from selling gadgets in Germany. Android Authority reports this.

The ban was announced by a German district court. Chinese corporation Lenovo and its subsidiary Motorola have reportedly been found guilty of infringing patents owned by US technology firm InterDigital. Lenovo intends to appeal the ban.

According to the decree, the sale of all smartphone brands, including the new Motorola Edge 50 line, is prohibited in the state. Journalists noticed that all mentions of smartphones have disappeared from the German Motorola website. Lenovo’s website states that branded laptops will be available as long as the devices are in stock in stores.

The material states that Germany previously banned sales of smartphones from Chinese corporations Oppo and OnePlus – they were accused of violating Nokia patents. However, after some time the companies settled the disputes.

Motorola is an American company, particularly known for producing phones and smartphones. In 2011, the company’s mobile division came under the control of Google and Lenovo.

In early April, Apple asked the US Court of Appeal to lift the ban on the supply and sale of the brand’s smartwatches. Previously, the sale of new wearable gadgets was banned due to violation of a Masimo patent.
