A paralyzed patient who received a Neuralink brain implant played a game of chess against a computer, controlling the pieces with his thoughts. The company producing a breakthrough chip called Telepathy published a video on x.com showing how American Noland Arbaugh controls a computer without using hands or a voice control system.
Neuralink works in humans. Elon Musk’s company boasts about the operation of the Telepathy chip
As the patient says, the biggest challenge was to distinguish “imagining movement from trying to move the cursor.” It took him several days to learn that the key to operating the Telepathy system was to focus on an object and move it, as it were, by force of will.
In January, Nolan Arbaugh became the first person to receive a Telepathy brain implant. In the video published by Neuralink, the 29-year-old says that the chip is not perfect and requires regular charging, but it is much better than previously used computer control methods. The man was especially happy to play “Civilization VI”.
The owner of Neuralink is Elon Musk. The company declares that its goal is to create a generally accessible brain interface that will enable people who are partially or completely paralyzed to communicate and function. “In the long term, it will be possible to redirect signals from the motor cortex away from the damaged part of the spine, which will enable people to walk again and use their hands normally,” said Elon Musk at X.
In the future, the Telepathy system will also find other applications. For example, it is supposed to enable you to control your phone or computer with your thoughts. In one of the interviews, Musk said that it would be possible, for example, to summon a remotely controlled car telepathically.
Animal rights activists criticize Neuralink. It’s about experiments on monkeys
Although Neuralink seems to be a groundbreaking device, ethical questions are raised about the way tests were carried out on animals, which ultimately allowed the chip to be implanted in humans. In 2022, it came to light that 15 of the 24 monkeys that took part in the experiments carried out at the company died due to internal hemorrhages in the brain during the research or were euthanized after their completion. The Physician Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) filed a complaint about violations of federal law by the University of California at Davis, where the experiments were conducted. In a 600-page report, PCRM accuses researchers of, among other things, failing to provide the macaques with appropriate veterinary care.
To death, after severe suffering, 15 out of 24 macaques – an incredible 63%. mortality before the end of the experiment – occurred due to the reprehensible, criminal negligence of the experimenters. This is the thousandth example of the prevailing indifference, amorality and cavalier attitude towards helpless victims of experiments in biomedicine.

Last year, the value of Neuralink was estimated at approximately USD 5 billion.
