Android Police: Polar ID biometric sensor will appear on Android smartphones

The startup Metalenz and Samsung Corporation have developed a new technology for unlocking smartphones by face. This was reported by Android Police.

The concept of the invention was presented at the MWC 2024 exhibition. The technology was invented by engineers of the startup Metalenz, which appeared on the basis of the Harvard laboratory. The Polar ID biometric sensor captures light reflected from the face and then identifies it.

According to experts, Polar ID can be considered an alternative to Face ID in the iPhone. With Face ID, a dot matrix is projected onto the user’s face, which is captured by the camera. In the case of Polar ID, the camera captures the light reflected from the face – the resulting impression is unique.

Metalenz specialists noted that Polar ID is much cheaper than Face ID and other similar sensors, and also takes up less space in the smartphone. According to engineers, biometric sensors based on polarized image capture will appear in smartphones no earlier than 2025.

At the end of February, Apple announced the creation of a new encryption standard for the iMessage messenger. It will protect user correspondence from attacks based on quantum computing.
