Do you have an older smartphone? You may soon lose access to the mBank application

mBank announced that it has suspended the update of its application on older versions of iOS and completely disabled it on older versions of Android. As a result, owners of some smartphones may lose access to mobile banking.

Smartphone manufacturers recommend that users have the latest version of the operating system. The problem is that almost every mobile device loses technical support after a few years and system updates stop appearing on it.

For people who replace their smartphone every two, three or even four years, this is not a big problem. It gets worse if we use the device for a much longer time. Then our phone stops receiving security updates and is more exposed to, for example, hacker attacks or data leaks.

mBank will withdraw applications from older versions of iOS and Android. It’s about safety

where concern for the security of data and, above all, our money, must be a priority. For this reason, banks from time to time decide to withdraw their applications from older versions of operating systems that may not be adequately secured.

mBank decided to take this step. The company informed customers that the app update was suspended on older versions of iOS and disabled on older versions of Android.

As for the Apple operating system, mBank plans to suspend application updates on iOS systems in versions lower than 16. – We will provide the exact date of suspension in the next communication – informs the bank.

In the case of Android, users of versions lower than 8 will lose access to the application. – At the turn of April and May 2024 (we will inform you about the exact date in the next communication) we will disable the application – announces mBank.

Android 7 premiered in 2016, almost 8 years ago, so the fact that mBank is also withdrawing support for this system should not be a major surprise. iOS 13, however, is much younger – Apple released this version of the system in September 2019.

For people who have older versions of systems, mBank recommends updating the software on their smartphone “to the version supported by the provider”. The company also emphasizes that it takes the above actions “for the safety of your money.”

It is worth noting that while in the case of Android, mBank explicitly writes about “disabling the application”, in the case of iOS it only mentions “suspending application updates”. We asked the bank to clarify whether after suspending the update, the mBank application on older versions of iOS will still work, but in the older version, or whether it will be completely disabled. We will update the text as soon as we receive a response.
