From the train to the tracks and from the plane? Does feces fall from the sky? This is how toilets on board work

How does an airplane toilet work? Few people wonder what happens after pressing the water drain button. Contrary to appearances, it is a complicated system, although its operation is simple. Does excrement from airplanes fall to the ground?

A certain Windsor resident is making news in 2021. Flying feces fell on a man sitting in his garden. Although nothing happened to him, the Briton was extremely unlucky. The waste was in liquid form and contaminated not only him, but also the entire garden. However, this is a “one in a billion case” and it is difficult to call it a norm. Why? It’s all because of how it works on the plane.

Are you afraid that feces will fall from the sky on your head? Better check how the airplane toilet works

Most people remember toilets in old railway cars with a hole peeking out of them. The contents leaked directly onto the tracks while driving. Although “open circuit” toilets are disappearing from the Polish landscape, there is still a belief that airplane toilets work in a similar way. Is feces actually discharged during flight?

Today, closed-circuit vacuum toilets are the norm on airplanes. However, there is no mention of draining water like at home or even on a train, which would significantly burden the cargo, especially during long-distance flights. Toilets work like a vacuum cleaner. After activating the valve, the contents are “sucked” inside using vacuum pressure. Everything is airtight, so there is no leakage of unpleasant odors or gases. To ensure smooth operation, do not throw tissues, pads, tampons or other items into the toilet. What happens to feces on a plane?

Where does airplane excrement fall? Stinky rain is rare

The sucked waste goes into a special tank filled with a special disinfectant liquid. The capacity and number of tanks depend on the route. During long-haul flights, they can have a capacity of up to 1,800 liters. The liquid ensures proper hygiene, and the hermetic system makes you forget about unpleasant odors.

What happens to the contents of the tank? It doesn’t come out during flight at all. Although this situation can happen, it is usually the result of a failure of the entire system, and the airlines investigate the matter in detail. The tanks are emptied after landing using a device that works somewhat like a home-made septic tank.
