Should you put your laptop to sleep or turn it off at night? The answer seems simple, but it is not the only one

Putting a laptop to sleep is one of its basic functions, but some people are afraid to use it. Does putting to sleep have a negative impact on components and what is better to do when putting the notebook away for a night or a few days? We reply.

Turning off or putting the laptop to sleep after work is one of those questions (right after “how to charge the battery in a smartphone”) that everyone has probably asked themselves at least once. On the one hand, turning off the computer at night saves battery life, but on the other hand, it wastes time the next day when the laptop needs to be turned on again. So what to do?

Should you put your laptop to sleep or turn it off at night? It depends

It depends, of course, on how we use the computer. When it comes to everyday work – i.e. we finish using the computer in the afternoon or evening and come back to it in the morning – there is no reason to close the operating system and only then close the laptop lid. Just put him to sleep.

Some people fear that putting notebooks to sleep at night discharges the battery, which may affect its lifespan in the long run. Some people also claim that a dormant laptop also affects the life of other components that are constantly under voltage. In practice, however, in modern laptops, energy consumption during sleep is minimal and even within a few years of the laptop’s life it should not have a noticeable impact, for example on its battery.

An exception may be some older devices, especially if their batteries already show a significant loss of real capacity. If such a computer can use half of the energy stored in the cell in sleep mode, it either goes to sleep incorrectly or the problem is the battery itself. Then it may actually be worth turning off the computer for the night.

Turning off your computer isn’t a bad thing. It’s worth doing this from time to time

On the other hand, when we use the laptop irregularly and we do not know when it will be opened again or we intend to leave it in a drawer for some time, it is worth turning off the system. Of course, putting your computer to sleep will not be harmful to your mobile computer, but turning off each personal computer from time to time is a good habit worth developing.

By turning off the system, we close all processes and applications that have been running in the background for a long time, which may then actually affect the battery life to some extent. Additionally, we allow the system to finalize previously installed updates. A longer trip or even a break from the computer for several days is a good excuse to turn off the laptop completely for some time.
