The independent data center, Pew Research Center, maintains a stream calculator that allows someone to determine which economic group they belong to in the United States.

According to 2018 data, 52% of Americans lived in middle-income households and about 29% had low incomes and 19% had high incomes.

To use the calculator, you must select the state you live in as well as the metropolitan area. You should also note the income you have without paying taxes, as well as the number of people living in the house.

A comparison is also made with other adults in a similar situation and takes into account education, age, race, ethnicity and marital status.

An analysis by the Pew Research Center shows that the average economic stratum has shrunk over the past five decades, from 61% in 1971 to 50% in 2021.

“The shrinking of the middle class has been accompanied by an increase in the share of adults in the high income bracket (from 14% in 1971 to 21% in 2021),” it added.

For someone to be considered middle class in the United States, they must earn $90,131 per year. (JO)
