The problems of Bank Spółdzielczy in Zambrów appeared last week when customers (both private and corporate) lost access to online banking and the bank’s mobile application. Fast transfers and some services, e.g. mojaID, also did not work.
A Polish bank fell victim to a hacker attack. It took a long time to restore the systems
As reported on Saturday, the bank fell victim to a ransomware attack, i.e. software that encrypts data and forces the payment of a ransom. The website reports that this was the first case of this type of attack on a bank in Poland. A ransomware attack often involves blocking access to services for a given company’s customers, and this was also the case here. However, payment cards still worked – in stores and at ATMs.
The Cooperative Bank in Zambrów initially reported a “failure resulting in unavailable banking services.” Shortly thereafter, it was admitted that a “security incident” was causing the problems. According to the bank’s information, the problem occurred on January 16 this year, and “immediately after identifying the incident” work began on restoring all functions. It also admitted that “customer data was encrypted.”
It took the bank’s specialists a lot of time to fight the attack. It took several days to restore operation, including: trading system. Ultimately, it was only possible on the evening of January 20. The break took almost a week. The Sekurak portal also learned from the BPS Group that the attack on the Cooperative Bank in Zambrów did not affect any other cooperative bank from the BPS Group or BPS Bank.
Customers won’t log into banking like they used to. It is necessary to contact the hotline
Currently, the website of the Cooperative Bank in Zambrów indicates that all previously unavailable systems and services are now operating normally. However, customers will not log in to online banking with their current password and will not use the mobileNet application associated with their phones.
The bank informs that each customer must change their banking password and re-pair the mobile application on their smartphone with their bank account. However, you cannot perform the procedure yourself. It is necessary to contact the bank via the bank’s hotline specially launched for this purpose.
