After taking over Twitter (now known as X) in 2022, Elon Musk implemented a number of changes, one of which was the introduction of fees for account verification. Verified accounts currently receive the so-called a marker (denoting a verified and reliable account) in one of three colors – blue for individual users, gold for companies, and gray for government organizations and politicians.
Gold tokens will be (much) cheaper. Musk wants $200 a month
Until now, the business account verification fee cost as much as $1,000 per month. Apparently, the gold tag was not of particular interest to entrepreneurs, because X decided to introduce a new, much cheaper option of account verification for companies. The platform announced the introduction of a basic program, which costs five times less and is aimed at small businesses.
Now, companies will have to pay $200 a month or $2,000 a year to verify their account. In return, however, they will receive a gold token, priority service and points that can be used to pay for advertising. According to X, these elements are intended to enable companies to “develop faster.” However, access to all paid tools of the X platform will still be available only as part of the full package (Full Access), which costs as much as $1,000 per month.
The difference in price is huge, but $200 a month for entrepreneurs and small companies still seems to be a very excessive amount (almost PLN 800). Especially since we are talking primarily about granting a small badge that is displayed next to the account name. However, Elon Musk apparently hopes that the lower price will help encourage companies to pay for subscriptions to X.
A similar model (subscriptions at different prices) is available for individual users. To get the blue tag of a verified account, you need to pay, which is currently available in three versions. The cheapest one (Basic) costs PLN 13.50 per month or PLN 142.85 per year in Poland, the middle one (Premium) costs PLN 36 per month or PLN 374.99 per year, and the most expensive (Premium+) costs PLN 72 per month or PLN 749.98 per year.
