Unanimously, with six votes in favor and three abstentions, the Commission on International Relations and Human Mobility of the National Assembly approved on the night of Wednesday, January 3, the report on the trade agreement signed between Ecuador and China, which will now go to the plenary session for discussion only . Ratification of the document will require at least 70 votes.

The approval of this report comes after members of the Commission met with representatives of various sectors, including former officials of the government of Guillermo Lass, in which the agreement was signed on May 10, 2023.

The treatment of the trade agreement signed with China is entering the final stage in the International Relations Commission

Jonathan Parra, of the ruling National Democratic Action Alliance (ADN), which chairs the legislative committee, announced the committee’s decision on his X account (formerly Twitter). “To protect artisans and local industry, to create jobs and increase exports from Ecuador, I voted for the Free Trade Agreement with China,” the lawmaker said.

The agreement with the report was also emphasized by the Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries. “The Committee on International Relations and Human Mobility of the National Assembly approved the report on the Free Trade Agreement between Ecuador and China. Ratification will now go to the full legislative session. The free trade agreement paves the way for us to reach the largest market on the planet with 1.4 billion consumers,” said the head of the country’s portfolio.

In the meantime, the commission’s decision was considered good news by former Minister of Production, Foreign Trade, Investments and Fisheries Daniel Legarda, who was one of those who defended the agreement when he was called before the commission. “Very good news: The Committee on International Relations and Human Mobility of the National Assembly approves the report for the ratification of the free trade agreement between Ecuador and China,” said the former minister.

China is Ecuador’s first non-oil trade partner. Access to the Chinese market is expected to increase exports by an additional $3 billion by 2030. (AND)
