As a reminder, on the night from Thursday to Friday, Telewizja Polska channels in digital terrestrial television will be transferred from the old system to the new DVB-T2 standard. Previously (in 2022), commercial stations had to transfer their channels to DVB-T2.
TVP will turn off three channels on terrestrial television. TVP1 has priority
It turns out that this process will have quite surprising consequences. As he noted, three channels will disappear from the terrestrial television offer when the multiplex used by TVP is transferred to DVB-T2. Telewizja Polska actually announced the changes on its website. The broadcaster explains that it had to decide to “modify the programming offer on terrestrial television” to provide viewers with “additional time to retune the equipment.”
Thus, on the night of December 14-15, three channels will disappear from terrestrial television – TVP Polonia, Alfa TVP and Belsat TV. Instead, the more frequently watched TVP1, TVP2 and TVP Info will appear in their place (we will see them under the numbers previously reserved for TVP Polonia, Alfa TVP and Belsat TV). They will be duplicated, i.e. broadcast on two multiplexes at the same time (and visible on TV sets in two places). This state of affairs will last until January 13 next year.
For the sake of viewers, and to provide them with additional time to retune their equipment, Telewizja Polska will temporarily modify the programming offer on terrestrial television. From December 15, temporary, parallel broadcasting of TVP1, TVP2 and TVP Info programs will be launched on the sixth multiplex. They will appear in the positions on the remote control: 19 – TVP1; 28 – TVP2; 36 – TVP Info instead of TVP Polonia, Alfa TVP and Belsat TV previously broadcast there. Consequently, in the period from December 15, 2023 to January 13, 2024, TVP1, TVP2 and TVP Info will be broadcast simultaneously from two multiplexes
– wrote TVP in a statement.
The translation is surprising. TVP does not want us to part with “Jedynka”
The public broadcaster’s translation may be surprising, but TVP has its own reasons. The mentioned multiplex (MUX 6) already broadcasts programs in the DVB-T2 standard. Meanwhile, when moving MUX 3 (where TVP1, TVP2 and TVP Info are located, among others), it may happen that some people will lose access to Polish Television channels. At least until the “equipment retuning” mentioned by television.
After re-searching for channels on a TV (or decoder) with DVB-T2 support, programs from the MUX 3 multiplex will appear on the screens. As can be concluded from the announcement, TVP wants to protect itself in case some viewers have a problem with it. These people will be able to find “Jedynka”, “Dwójka” and TVP Info – key public television channels – in another place for some time. Unfortunately, at the expense of viewers watching TVP Polonia, Alfa TVP and Belsat TV.
It is worth remembering that to receive channels from multiplexes transferred to DVB-T2 (all, not only TVP) it is necessary to have a TV with support for this standard. People who have not yet equipped themselves with such equipment have one last chance to do so. Currently, not only all new ones, but also slightly older ones (such as TV models from two or three years ago) support DVB-T2. You can always decide to buy an additional DVB-T2 decoder, the prices of which start from several dozen zlotys.
