SlashGear: Hackers can use smartwatches to spy on users
The authors of SlashGear described the dangers associated with hacking smart watches and other wearable accessories. The material is available on the media website.
According to journalists, they are currently not aware of any cases of mass hacking of any wearable devices. “The risk of hacking smart watches or fitness bracelets is rather theoretical, but it exists,” experts noted.
The authors said that the greatest danger lies in the Bluetooth connection of a wearable device to a smartphone, through which data is exchanged. In this regard, users should pay attention to the applications installed on the phone – they must be verified and downloaded from reliable sources. Otherwise, hackers can use the smart gadget to spy on the owner of the device.
Journalists advised users to check the list of permissions granted to specific applications: “Not all applications need to know your location or have access to your photos.”
In August, scientists said that the straps of smart watches and fitness bracelets may contain dangerous germs and bacteria. The authors collected straps from 20 random users, tested them and found that in 85 percent of cases they contained Staphylococcus aureus (Staph aureus), 60 percent – Escherichia coli (E. coli).
