This is the final end of the WI-Free service, which allowed people with limited data transfer to use the Internet without limits even outside their home. the purple operator confirmed the information and revealed the reasons.
Play closes the cool UPC Polska service. Apparently it is no longer needed
WI-Free is an ingenious service that allowed UPC Polska (now Play) subscribers to use the Internet even when they did not have an appropriate data limit in their mobile subscription. It was enough for such an Internet user to be within the Wi-Fi range of a router supporting WI-Free to be able to connect to the Internet. Regardless of whether it was the neighbor’s router from the apartment next door or the network found in a restaurant on the other side of town. In large cities, finding such a place was not a problem.
The Play press office confirmed to Wirtualnemedia.pl that from December 15 this year. the service will eventually be closed. “As of December 15, 2023, we are ending support for the WI-Free functionality,” Play wrote. The network explains that the service was launched in 2014, when the quality of the Internet and data limits were at a much different level than today. In fact, today we have a fast 5G network, and many operators offer large free transfer packages, but it is worth remembering that it still does not work well indoors and there are still many Internet users who have a modest supply of gigabytes per month.
Play also explained that closing WI-Free is not an excuse for the customer to terminate the contract. Access to the service was free of charge and was not guaranteed by any provisions in the contract with the operator, so its absence cannot be a reason for claims. However, Play did not reveal how many customers have used WI-Free so far.
Since then, customers of the now defunct network have been Play customers, but their contracts concluded before the rebranding remained valid. “With the entry in the National Court Register, UPC Polska formally becomes part of the P4 company, which has taken over all rights and obligations of UPC Polska. This means that current UPC Polska customers can continue to conveniently use their services under the existing conditions. Both the duration of the contracts, the amount of fees and bank account details for making payments remain unchanged,” the Play press office informed on August 31.
