The ogladaj.to website operated for at least three years. Movies, series and entertainment programs were made available on the website – illegally, of course. The investigation into this case has been conducted by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin since mid-2020.
It was well organized, the perpetrator used servers run by foreign entities, including those located in Russia and then Ukraine. Fees for server services were made in cryptocurrencies, which made it even more difficult to identify the perpetrator.
– we read in the announcement of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Krakow.
As Małopolska police add, the culmination of a three-year investigation was the arrest of people associated with the website, which took place at the beginning of October this year. Among those detained is the founder of the website, an IT specialist operating the website and an intermediary selling access codes to the paid version of the website.
The police said that during the search of the suspects’ places of residence, money in various currencies, funds in accounts, luxury cars, as well as high-quality sports equipment, silver bars and gold collector coins were seized. The total value of the secured property is approximately PLN 1 million.
The suspects were charged with illegally distributing other people’s works on the Internet in the form of films and series, turning it into a permanent source of income and deriving financial benefits from prostitution by other people. The men were not arrested, but the police placed them under police surveillance.
According to estimates by distributors of films and broadcasters of programs that were illegally distributed via the ogladaj.to website, losses in this respect may amount to up to PLN 15 million.
Piracy is still doing well in Poland. Even PLN 3 billion in losses per year
According to Deloitte’s report on online piracy, the audiovisual market loses almost PLN 3 billion annually from this phenomenon, and losses to the state treasury amount to as much as PLN 1.86 billion.
Each such successful Police action shows that officers are increasingly better prepared to act against online crime, even though criminals, wanting to avoid responsibility, use increasingly complex operating models.
– says Teresa Wierzbowska, president of the Sygnał Association, which fights piracy.
For more effective protection of intellectual property, it is necessary to implement mechanisms such as blocking websites and illegal live broadcasts. This level of protection is already used in many European countries
– adds the expert.
This is another successful police raid on pirate movie and TV series websites operating in Poland. At the beginning of this year, the zalukaj.vip website was closed, and in September several websites with links to pirated films, series, games and books were removed from the Internet – including: Vorek.pl, Pobieramy24.xyz, Exsites.pl, Darkmachine.pl, Sdcv.pl, Files4You.org, vTorrent.pl and Warezik.eu.
