At the end of the 1990s and in the first years of the new millennium, Gadu-Gadu became a phenomenon in Poland. Simple in its form, the instant messenger was very popular on the Vistula River. Suffice it to say that in 2010, GG boasted as many as 10.5 million users.
In the following years, however, the application’s popularity began to decline. This was caused by both the boom in “new” social media (starting with the now defunct Nasza Klasa and ending with Facebook), but also by numerous mistakes made by the owners of the website. At one point, they wanted to catch all the bulls by the tail and turn a simple messenger into a “multimedia combine”. This brought a wave of criticism to GG, and subsequent users migrated towards other services.
Gadu-Gadu still exists. Now he wants to fight Google Drive
Years pass, internet services once popular in Poland disappear (who remembers Grono.net or Tlen today?), and GG still exists. In 2018, the messenger was acquired by England.pl, which a year later announced a grand plan to reactivate the service. Currently, GG can be used both on a computer, in a browser and on a smartphone. In August this year – on the occasion of Gadu-Gadu’s 23rd birthday – the company announced that the application is currently used by 1 million users and is often used in the communication of small and medium-sized companies.
However, the current owner of Gadu-Gadu again has ambitions to make it something more than just an ordinary instant messenger. which allows you to transfer large files – up to 4 GB. In this way, the company wants to compete with services such as Google Drive or WeTransfer.
While we can freely send smaller files by e-mail or via one of the chats, we may have problems when sending heavier files. There are various services available on the Internet for sending larger files, they have good and bad sides and many limitations.
– explains GG.
How to send large files via GG?
The file transfer function in GG is available in both the mobile and browser versions, as well as the Windows application. When talking to a friend, just select the paperclip icon and attach a file that will be sent from your computer/telephone. GG will send the file to the server and generate a link that you can open and then download the file to your device.

Files can also be sent to people who do not use GG on a daily basis. To do this, just open a conversation window with a contact called “My Clipboard” (no. 8015) and attach a file, and then copy the received link. Files sent by GG are stored on servers for 3 months, and in the case of the paid GG Premium service (PLN 9.99 per month) – for up to 2 years.
