Huge deposits of white hydrogen. They were looking for methane and discovered the fuel of the future

France has reasons to be happy. It turned out that the country was located on a real “gold vein”. In this case it is white hydrogen. The world’s largest deposits of this future fuel were discovered in Lorraine.

It was an accident, but now the French can rub their hands. Scientists were looking for methane in Lorraine, famous for its rich coal deposits. After examining the samples, it turned out that they contained white hydrogen. White, i.e. coming from natural deposits and considered by many to be the fuel of the future. According to scientists, the deposit discovered in France may contain 46 million tons of white hydrogen. With climate change, hydrogen is being promoted as a potential replacement for fossil fuels and the discovery of a white hydrogen deposit in France is a significant step towards the development of more sustainable energy sources.

At a level of over a thousand meters below the earth’s surface, the concentration of white hydrogen is 15%, but then it increases significantly. At a depth of 3 km it may exceed 90%. – reports interestingengineering.com. White hydrogen can be used to produce electricity, heat and fuel without emitting greenhouse gases. Scientists are still working on developing a way to extract hydrogen from this deposit. And this is not a simple matter. The French will primarily try to avoid the seismic threat.

White, gray, green, i.e. all the colors of hydrogen

Although hydrogen is colorless, there are different varieties. Hence, to distinguish them, scientists gave them colors. White hydrogen is naturally occurring hydrogen in underground deposits and produced by fracking. In addition to white hydrogen, which is considered the most valuable, we also distinguish green, blue, gray, black, brown, as well as pink and turquoise hydrogen.

Poland is currently the third producer of hydrogen in the European Union and the fifth in the world. Hydrogen is produced here in the natural gas reforming process or as part of crude oil refining. “Poland produces over one megaton of gray hydrogen annually, obtained from natural gas. The leader in this production is PKN Orlen, followed by Grupa Azoty,” reports the Ernst&Young website. The European Union has already allocated one billion euros of aid for the development of this sector, and Poland may be one of the leaders of the hydrogen revolution.
