Tarasova: neutral status is possible without signing political declarations
Honored figure skating coach of the USSR Tatyana Tarasova named the condition for Russian athletes to accept neutral status. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Tarasova said that athletes must decide for themselves whether they are ready to compete in a neutral status or not. “But a neutral status is possible only if there is no requirement to sign various political declarations,” the coach emphasized.
On March 28, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Belarusians and Russians who do not support the special operation in Ukraine be allowed to compete in neutral status. At the same time, athletes from Russia and Belarus associated with the armed forces or security agencies of their countries are recommended not to be allowed to participate in tournaments.
At the end of February 2022, many sports organizations banned Russians from participating in tournaments on the recommendation of the IOC. At the same time, in some disciplines, such as tennis, MMA and chess, Russian athletes were not excluded and continued to perform in a neutral status.
