These are the most common mechanical failures that cause traffic accidents

There are three common foreseeable mechanical failures in road accidents: bad brakes, bad tires, and steering system failure. This is shown by global statistics and is confirmed by the trend of registered attentions in the various technical workshops in the country.

“It is essential to regularly pay attention to these basic systems for the active and passive safety of the vehicle, through preventive and corrective maintenance as needed,” said Bladimir Vásquez, national manager of Teojama Comercial Services.

Traffic accidents due to foreseeable mechanical failures have increased over the past five years, according to official figures from the National Traffic Agency, caused 50 deaths at the accident site and 210 injuries in total, from 2018 to 2022.

● Brake failures: The braking system is critical to road safety and any failure can lead to a serious collision. Brakes can fail for a number of reasons, such as a low brake fluid level, worn brake discs, or worn brake pads. According to the attentions in the Teojama Comercial workshops, preventive maintenance is the most requested with 70% of the total attentions. This indicates that vehicle owners are interested in preventing mechanical failures before they happen. However, the remaining 30% corresponds to corrective maintenance, that is, it is carried out when a mechanical breakdown has already occurred.
