Congress approved a new national holiday for July 23

During the early morning, the Plenary session of the Congress of the Republic approved the opinion that modifies articles 3 and 4 of Law 16126 and that declares the Day of the Air Force of Peru and a national holiday on July 23 of each year in commemoration of the heroic sacrifice of Captain FAP José Abelardo Quiñones Gonzáles.

It should be noted that, previously, at the end of 2022, this initiative was approved by the Congress as a working holiday and was observed. In this sense, this recent authorized replacement text confirms that it will be a holiday both for the private and public sectors and applies the figure of “search” to the observation made by the Executive.

However, Fabiola Ruiz, associate of the Labor area of the Miguel Mur & Abogados law firm, indicated that, until it is published in the newspaper A Peruvian manthere is still no certainty about whether it will be applied from this year, as it happened with the previous day off.

“It is worth remembering what happened this year with the vote on the June 7 holiday, which was previously approved by Congress, but was published in El Peruano after the aforementioned holiday. This led to the fact that said holiday will only apply from 2024. However, in the specific case of the holiday of July 23, it is possible that the norm will be published so that it applies from this year,” Ruiz indicated.
