Intel wanted to join the group of companies that are working on building a quantum computer. The world’s largest manufacturer of integrated circuits has unveiled the first quantum processor.
Intel wants to help build the first practical quantum computer
The processor that was baptized with a name Tunnel Falls, consists of 12 spin qubits. A qubit is the smallest and indivisible unit carrying quantum information, on which the principle of operation of quantum computers is based. Spin qubits, on the other hand, are one of the types of qubits that scientists have recently been working on very intensively (they can give quantum computers much greater possibilities than other qubits).
Intel’s 12-qubit chip was built from a silicon wafer, and its production process is to be similar to traditional CMOS chips. What’s more, from one silicon wafer, Intel can build as many as 24,000. chips using 95 percent. the entire volume of material, and each of the systems can have from 4 to 12 qubits.
Of course, Intel Tunnel Falls will not go on sale, because such a processor simply cannot be used in practice. This is part of a larger research project on quantum computers, in which Intel wants to actively participate. The American company will provide the chips to research institutions willing to conduct research on this technology.
The company admits that there is still a long way to go to develop a ready-made quantum computer, and for such devices to work more efficiently than a traditional computer, processors operating on at least several thousand qubits are needed. Such equipment may turn out to be a revolution, completely changing the way in which, for example, cryptography works.
It is worth recalling that this is an investment worth USD 4.6 billion (PLN 18.72 billion), which will probably employ several thousand people in the future.
USD 9.9 billion (initially, the subsidy was supposed to be smaller), and on Monday the American , that it intends to build a factory in Magdeburg worth a trifle of EUR 30 billion. The construction of the facility is expected to attract 7,000 people to work, and 3,000 workers will find permanent employment in the factory.
