The National Assembly (AN) of Venezuela, controlled by the ruling party, accepted it on Thursday the unprecedented resignation of the majority of the rectors of the National Electoral Council (CNE) and opened the process of appointing new authorities, a task the deputies hope to complete as soon as possible.

With “parliamentary urgency”, the lawmakers agreed to accept the resignations submitted by the CNE authorities close to Chavismo, and to review the status of the entire board of directors of the entity, including the opposition-related rectors. review”. Enrique Márquez and Roberto Picón, who have not resigned.

Part of the board of directors of the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, including the president Pedro Calzadilla and the rector Alexis Corredor, resigned in order to guarantee “political stability” in view of the 2024 presidential election.

The president of the AN, Jorge Rodríguez, considered this process fundamental, in view of the 2024 presidential elections, which should be led by the rectors who step down, as they were appointed in May 2021 for a term of seven years.

In this sense, he called on deputies to treat the process of electing new rectors as an “urgent” matter – starting today with the formation of a preparatory working committee composed of 11 legislators – to avoid any “adverse event that threatens against what is a fundamental responsibility’ of Parliament.

Rodríguez pushed for completion “as soon as possible” of the assessments and deadlines for the appointment of a new CNE board of directors, which will conclude, he said, with the presentation to the AN of the 5 main rectors and the 10 alternates.

So far it is not clear what will happen to the rectors who have not resigned, following the publication of the letter of resignation from the president of the CNE, Pedro Calzadilla, signed by 8 of the 15 members of the board of directors.
