Art as Protest: An artist from Colombia, in line with the controversy that still lingers on how Pablo Escobar introduced hippos in that country and that they are an environmental problem today, exhibits some extraordinary sculptures of these animals: they have the face of the extinct boss of the Medellín Cartel!
The artist Adolfo Jácome Camacho exhibited the curious sculptures in Alfonso López Square in Valledupar, Prensa Libre publishes. There are three artworks showing the drug trafficker with the body of hippos.
The sculptures, Infobae describes, are 1.50 meters high and 70 centimeters wide. They stand on a plinth, covered with details, where the gold color predominates, visually impressive, El Tiempo adds.
They were created “to raise awareness about the conservation of these animals”.

“I’m not focusing on Pablo Escobar as a character”
Jácome resolves any hint of controversy over the former head of the Medellian cartel by saying, “We’re not focused on Pablo Escobar as a character.”
“We try to make people aware of the risk that many fishermen in the Magdalena riverbanks run from the presence of these animals,” says the artist.
It is a delicate issue that the national government must pay attention to, because it has remained with short solutions.

In recent years, this species has become an environmental problem for the country, due to the multiplication of these animals that were initially brought to Pablo Escobar’s farm in Nápoles. Hundreds are estimated to be found in the wild along the Magdalena River and lagoons in the country,” Jácome points out, according to El Tiempo.

“There were two female hippos and a male when the drug trafficker took them to Colombia on March 4 in a private plane to Rionegro airport and transferred them to the treasury, El País reported.
In the neighboring country, hippos have been considered an invasive species for more than a year.
The specimens, introduced more than 40 years ago, migrated from the Magdalena Medio to the Momposian Depression, revealed a study by the Alexander von Humboldt Institute and National University, cited by the EFE news agency.
A study released in 2022 placed the number of animals at 133, highlighting “that their growth rate is higher than that recorded in Africa.”
