The government of Peru, led by the president Dinah Boluarteexpressed support for Ecuador on Wednesday and assured that the country’s president, William Lassoexercised “his constitutional functions” by declaring the dissolution of parliament and calling early elections, while a political trial against him was underway.
“The government of Peru reiterates its support for the democratic process in the sister republic of Ecuador,” Peru’s foreign ministry said in a brief statement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that “it wishes that the general elections, which will result from the decision of President Guillermo Lasso in the exercise of his constitutional functions, enable the Ecuadorian people to maintain political governance and social peace .”
This morning, in a message to the nation, Lasso, through the legal mechanism called crucifixion, announced the dissolution of parliament so that he would rule by decree until his successor took office.
The Ecuadorian president went to the General Assembly the day before to make his defense argument against the opposition’s charge of an alleged crime of embezzlement.
The legal figure known as dead cross in Ecuador, envisaged in the 2008 constitution, allows him to dissolve parliament instead of waiting for the second day of the debate that should take place in the chamber to vote later on the motion of censure, which received 92 votes required to remove it, equivalent to two-thirds of the hemicycle.
“Ecuador needs a new political and social pact that will allow it to emerge from the grave political crisis it finds itself in, which unfortunately deepens every day,” Lasso said at the beginning of his message.
He emphasized that the solution must put an end to “an irrational and futile confrontation” and pointed out that it is not possible to make progress and meet the major challenges “insecurity and terrorism pose us with an Assembly that as a political project has destabilized the government of democracy and the state.
