The United States government, headed by President Joe Biden, announced the imminent opening of migrant processing centers in Colombia and Guatemala.

This should prevent the increase in the flow of migrants to Mexico’s southern border, as well as the perilous journey thousands of these people make to get there, sometimes traversing the dreaded jungle of Darien, according to the State Department.

The measure, announced by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, comes weeks before the so-called Title 42 expires.

How many migrants will be processed in these centers per month?

Mayorkas said he expects these new centers to process at least 5,000 to 6,000 migrants each month.

The official added that the aim is to contact people where they are, take traffickers out of the game and prevent migrants from having to take the dangerous route to the United States.

The migrant centers will be managed by international organizations affiliated with the United States, such as the United Nations Office for Refugees (Acnur) or the International Organization for Migration.

The governments of Spain and Canada have indicated their willingness to receive people referred through these processing centers.

Other measures that the United States will apply to migrants

Likewise, they will also apply a new rule prohibiting those who cross the border illegally from seeking asylum.

In addition, they will expand the expedited deportation process that will apply to anyone who cannot prove a legal reason to remain in the country.

Maryorkas explained that anyone evicted under this ordinance — known as Title 8 — will be barred from entering the United States for five years.
