The habit of picking your nose can lead to thinning of the mucous membrane, constant bleeding, and even the appearance of a hole between the nasal cavities. This was stated in an interview with Arguments and Facts by an otolaryngologist, candidate of medical sciences Vladimir Zaitsev.
The doctor pointed out that the nasal mucosa, in addition to the fleecy epithelium, is covered with mucus. It can irritate the septum, which causes a desire to pick it out. However, if a person regularly gets into the nose with a finger or non-sterile objects, such as a pen, this leads to a gradual drying and thinning of the mucous membrane and, as a result, the appearance of crusts on it, the doctor explained.
To remove them, a person begins to pick his nose even more often, which eventually provokes bleeding.
At first, the bleeding will be small, after which it will begin to intensify, and then it will move to a stage when it will be almost impossible to stop it. As a result, this will lead to perforation of the nasal septum, when the mucous membrane dries out, the nutritional function is disturbed, all this leads to the appearance of a hole between the nasal cavities.
